Sochi, the Russian Riviera

It was the best Soviet resort where millions of people enjoyed staying, both top members of the USSR Communist party and common workers of soviet plants, who got a tourvoucher for the achievements in their job. One of historical places here is Stalin’s dacha, a very atmospheric place with a quite modest interior. The sanatoriums of Sochi provided medical treatment using mineral water and medical mud, so people could not only spend their leisure time but improve their health as well.

Sochi is located in sub tropical climate zone. Sochi enjoys 300 sunny days annually, which is unbelievable for any other part of Russia. This makes nearly all the year comfortable for visiting Sochi, except, maybe, November through January.

Now Sochi has become well-known after it has been chosen as the host of 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

The XXII Winter Olympics took place 7-23 Feb 2014 and were followed two weeks later by the Winter Paralympic Games, 7-18 Mar 2014. The Olympic and Paralympic Games were held in Sochi and the nearby ski resort of Roza Khutor at Krasnaya Polyana. It was the first time Russia had hosted Olympics since the breakup of the USSR in 1991.

Sochi has always been associated in Russia's national mentality with the south, palms and a hot climate, that's why it was quite a bit of a surprise for many that the city won the 2014 Winter Olympic bid. This phenomenon will be probably never be understood by Russians completely: every place in the country has a real winter, but Sochi? The answers are absence of harsh frost and a very promising Alpine resort of Krasnaya Polyana in the city area.  For Sochi, the excitement doesn’t end with 2014. After a few years, Russia’s resort city will be back on the world stage as it hosts the 2018 World Cup. And when a city in the biggest country hosts the largest event of the world’s most popular sport, there is no limit to the amount of excitement to take place. Matches will be held in the still new and almost unused Fisht Olympic Stadium in front of nearly 48,000 of the luckiest football fans in the world. Don’t miss your chance to be one of these 48,000. Come to Sochi in the summer of 2018 for the football, stay for everything else the city has to offer and come back many times after you fall in love with paradise on the Black Sea.

Activities in Sochi

Swim in the Black Sea

The summer months are considered the most attractive for swimming. The region has a Mediterranean type of climate, gentle and moderate, with an average winter temperature in the range of 8-10 °С along the coast. In summer the temperature can reach up to 38-40 °С, the sea is 26°С.

However, those who know the situation well often prefer to come in early fall, referred to as the “velvet season” in Russian, when the resort is less crowded but the water remains warm (an average of 24 °С in September). The public bathing areas can be crowded in peak season, but many of higher level hotels have their own section of the beach restricted for use by their guests or those willing to pay a little extra for the privilege. The black sea shore is rocky and you need special shoes to enter the sea.

Ski the Slopes

While Sochi is first and foremost known as a beach resort, its location by the Caucasus Mountains means that vacationers can enjoy a wealth of winter-sports activities, including at Krasnaya Polyana ski village. The exact ski season varies from year to year, but generally runs from December through to April. If previously the snow facilities were somewhat modest, the Winter Olympics has seen Krasnaya Polyana upgraded to a truly international standard, while new resort areas, such as the Rosa Khutor complex, have taken shape. Comfortable modern express trains now run between the ski village and Sochi taking roughly 70 minutes each direction.
